Happy at work

Can work make you happy?

It can, but maybe not through the things we think.

Many of us have come to believe that we will be happy when we get the job title, money and admiration of others. Whilst these can eliminate the sources of unhappiness, it doesn't necessarily create happiness.

From a personal perspective, social scientist and Harvard Business School Professor Arthur C. Brookes, says that research indicates that happiness at work can more likely be found through what he refers to as Earned success and Service to others.

Earned success is where you are able to feel you are able to create value in your life, work and in the lives of others through your work. Therefore it is important as leaders that we help those we lead to create earned success and also to recognise the value they create..

Brookes also says that research indicates that it doesn’t matter what the job is, but if you feel you are helping others in some way it will contribute to your happiness.

As a manager, what can you do to facilitate a workplace that is more likely to lead to a happy team?

Research done by Michael C Bush, CEO of global research and analytics firm “Great Place to Work” indicates that workplaces which have reportedly have more happy employees have higher levels of:

  • Trust and respect
  • Fairness
  • Listening intently to the extent that what someone says might actually change your mind
